The last three months I have worked in a studio at the Duende Studios in Rotterdam to create some new work. At the end of my work period in Duende I gave a presentation of the works made in the last six months. For more photographs click on the photo.
Last summer I traveled across Twente, a region in the Netherlands, to take photographs of landmarks in this area, mostly architecture and landscape. The whole project is organized by the Architektuurcentrum Twente in Enschede, The Netherlands. The photographs are taken with my self-made 4 x 5 inch pinhole camera.
The slide-installation has been displayed at an exhibition at the Städtische Galerie Haus Seel in Siegen, Germany. Three slides of an amusement park have been projected on three drawings I made based on a couple of photographs I took visiting the amusement park in 2008.
The video installation Strand and Schneeball has been displayed at an exhibition at Souterrain in Amsterdam. The two videos are both projected on a large piece of paper attached to the wall. The projections are 165cm wide and 125cm high. For this work I filmed rather abstract snow landscapes that seem almost unrealistic. On first sight the viewer feels as if they are looking at a drawing or a painting.
Schmidts Camera Obscura was located in Cuxhaven in front of the Kunstverein Cuxhaven. I have been invited to convert a cargo container into a Camera Obscura. The opening of the exhibition was Saturday, the 25th of October, 2008 and the exhibition will be open to the public until the 9th of November, 2008. I will also be giving workshops on how to build and use a Camera Obscura yourself.
This project took place in September 2008 in North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany. It consisted of a group of four traveling cargo containers which housed projects of different artists. I was granted the use of one container and changed it into a Camera Obscura. It traveled through the cites of Iserlohn, Hagen, Menden and Siegen, the town I was born in. I took pictures with the container, and I gave explanations to visitors. There also was a lot of attention by the media, both television and newspapers. All in all a very exciting project, which I was very glad to be a part of.
Last year, I built my own Camera Obscura out of a CD box that I bought at IKEA. It turned out to be a real good camera, and I’ve made a lot of pictures with it already. On this page you can see how it was built, and get an idea of the kind of photographs you can make with it.
In 2004 I was invited to join an exhibition titled “Spirit” at a cultural center in Enschede, The Netherlands. I exhibited an installation made of bible pages, in which I discussed the role of women in the holy book.
